"an eye for an eye" is embedded into the Islamic legal system. I am certain that after 1400 years, it is a part of the very culture. Remember, once land is controlled by Islam, it cannot ever change to anything else, or else it is 'occupied' land. I suspect that this is why they consider the land being raped, so it can follow that you can do anything to rid the land of the 'occupiers'. No wonder warfare is so common when dealing with these guys.
